Ancient Grains Make a Comeback

Did you enjoy a summer salad with red, yellow or green heirloom tomatoes this year? They have made a big “come back” on the American plate. Similar to the increased demand for heirloom tomatoes, people want to eat more heirloom whole grains or “ancient” grains.

But, what is an ancient grain? There is no official definition, according to the Whole Grains Council. However, ancient grains are loosely defined as grains that are largely unchanged over the last several hundred years. This means that modern wheat, which is constantly bred and changed, is not an ancient grain, while spelt would be considered an ancient grain in the wheat family. These heirloom grains, along with other whole grains have made a comeback because of the high quality fiber and protein they provide in people’s diets.

Health experts recommend that half of all the grains you eat should be whole grains.  Most Americans consume enough grains, but few are whole grains. For optimal health, at least half of all the grains you eat should be whole grains. But how can you easily tell the difference?

In September, Fresh Conversations participants will go on a whole grains discovery tour by checking out common food packaging to learn how to spot whole grains. Join a local program to learn more about whole grain label reading and cooking.

Trying new foods is a highlight of every Fresh Conversation’s program. In September, Fresh Conversation participants enjoyed sampling steel-cut oats.  Steel-cut oats are unrolled oats cut into two or three pieces. Similar to oats, they have a chewy texture and nutty flavor. This month, participants will sample steel-cut oats and discuss tips for cooking and preparing it successfully.

Each month Fresh Conversation participants also explore activities, exercises and stretches to help keep their bodies’ strong and fit.  In addition to strength and fitness, regular activity boosts mood, energy, focus and memory.  September’s Fresh Conversations patrons will discuss activities they can do as fall approaches.

Fresh Conversations is a free program offered by NEI3A and designed to promote fun, fellowship and food. New members are always welcome.
