Financial Exploitation of Seniors Presentations

According to the Administration for Community Living an estimated 5 million older adults are abused, neglected, or exploited each year. Older Americans lose $2.6 billion or more annually due financial abuse and exploitation, funds that could be used to pay for basic needs such as housing, food, and medical care. Only one in five of these crimes are discovered and it can happen to anyone - a family member, a neighbor, even you.

Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging’s (NEI3A’s) Elder Abuse Prevention & Awareness Program will be hosting four presentations throughout Northeast Iowa to raise awareness about financial exploitation.  Andrew Cederdahl, Attorney for Iowa Legal Aid, will present information about financial exploitation, what to look for, what to do if you suspect exploitation is occurring, and your legal rights.  Presentations will be held at the following locations:

  • Waterloo – Friday, June 9 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. – Waterloo Senior Center, 2101 Kimball Avenue in Waterloo.

  • Decorah – Thursday, June 15 from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. – Winneshiek County Senior Center, 806 River Street in Decorah.
